Richard jackson mdyetseni
executive director

Mr. Richard Jackson Mdyetseni is the current Executive Director for the Malawi Tourism Council (MTC). He holds an MSc. Agribusiness Management and a Bachelors in Accountancy (UNIMA).

He brings with him vast experience in leading and managing organisations from varying sectors and has spent the past 20 years working in International Donor supported programs in Malawi such as the World Bank, GIZ, African Development Bank, European Development Fund, COMIC Relief among others.

He has worked at Finance and Senior Management levels both in the NGOs sector and the Public service development projects in Agriculture, Tourism, Health and Finance and has worked in various public institutions and sectors.

A key committee member in establishing various milestone public tourism and transport projects such as Umodzi Hotel/Presidential Villas and the Vale Nacala Railway projects where he played a role as the Finance Analyst.

He has worked and contributed to the development of the tourism cultural sub-sector and helped establish the national association called the Malawi Cultural Heritages Association (MACHA) as its first chairman. It has brought together all cultural groups in Malawi as a cultural tourism front in a bid to put culture as a key driver in the Tourism Value Chain.

He brings to the MTC a new direction and quality product offer to its clientele.

MTC faces lots of challenges among which include inadequate financial resources, working capacity, infrastructure and equipment, office vehicles, office accommodation, visibility and divisions among operators in the industry, inactive sub-sector associations etc.

However, the new management proposes a turnaround strategy that will address these challenges. Key aspects include mobilization of adequate financial resources, establishment of Lobby and Advocacy Think Tank to influence Policy, Economic and Legal Instruments frameworks, review the functional and work processes including the review of MTC 2018-2022 Strategic Plan. Creation of strong Networks and Partnerships (Donors, Investments, Services, PPP)..Frame work contracts by MTC on behalf members will be explored to build their knowledge and capacity in Tourism core business, Accounting, Taxation, Marketing, Microfinance, ICT etc. Critically, aligning to the existing key policy strategies and institutions such as Malawi Vision 2063; 2030 MGD goals, PPP and NPC working groups will be a priority.

An enhanced ICT and Marketing service is also a catalyst for improved service delivery (Data Base, Magazine, Digital Payment Platforms, Webpage, Visibility etc) and above all the MTC has to ensure it has transparency and accountability at the core of its values.
