THE NATIONAL TOURISM MONTH LAUNCH

On Tuesday, the 7th of September2021, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Wildlife, Dr. Michael Usi launched the national tourism month. He announced that the 2021 tourism month will be commemorated under the theme "Tourism for Inclusive Growth". the theme focuses on Tourism's ability to drive inclusive development and the role it plays in promoting respect while generating opportunities for many millions across the globe. Like many other economic sectors, tourism has been hit hard and affected by Covid-19 pandemic. Closer to home, many businesses have been affected and so have the communities and other marginalized groups that depend on tourism to sustain their livelihoods. The theme therefore describes this year's world tourism day commemoration as an opportunity to look beyond tourism statistics and acknowledge that behind every number, there is a person.

"My Ministry designated the tourism month as a platform for fostering awareness of the socio and economic contributions of tourism to the country's economy. In line with the theme, therefore the main aim of the national tourism month this year will be to celebrate tourism's ability to drive inclusive development and the role it plays in promoting respect while generating opportunities for many people across the country" said the Minister.

The Ministry therefore, has lined up the following activities:

  • introducing photo and video challenge competitions jointly with industry players, local communities and travelers engaging in local activities and events
  • Undertaking regional media familiarization tours to establishments that are working closely with local communities
  • Carrying out stakeholder engagements between this Ministry and captains of the industry; to share experiences and also advance government's position     towards recovery programme of the sector
  • Commemoration of the World Tourism Day

Dr. Michael Usi further encouraged various players to collaborate and work together if tourism is to thrive amidst the pandemic. He further urges the public to take some time and support the tourism industry whether by buying curios, eating at a local restaurant, attending an event or going to various tourist attractions in the country as this will help to sustain livelihoods of those that depend on a thriving tourism industry
